I picked it up the moment I was invited. I replied later, and the stretch from then until today has felt long. Those brothers’ fifty seconds: a shell carved from within by friction, a vessel glowing faintly in a museum, having slipped free of even its role as an exoskeleton. Could it be a star now?
This time, the fifty seconds are a fragment of the marks left on the shell, a chosen expression. We pick them up, bring them back, roll them onto the bed, stretch them out or cut them apart, and together enact the myth. If so, even after spending tens of minutes, or even hours, perhaps it is the resignation that comes just before the phone screen goes black, rather than the myth we enact together, that lets that star slip free. The Men in Grey leave, and all that’s left is to see it with my own eyes.
(For instance, will this room be the same size today and tomorrow? Or is it that its size cannot be changed? I want to walk with both the hope that it can always be changed and the fear that it might be changed against my will, letting them roll around in my guts. It seems different, too, from wanting to turn a problem into a non-problem.)

The moon suspended in the sky and the wires crossing in front of it. Though separated by an immense distance in physical space, these two elements draw close on the image plane and briefly enter into correspondence. This configuration, however, is not determined by the moon and the wires alone. As the person behind the camera changes position or line of sight, however slightly, the space between the two and the way they overlap change with every shift. The "you" in the title can be understood as the viewer, the person behind the camera, the camera, or even the moon itself. What, then, changes through movement—the spatial relationship within the image, or our perception of reality? The work quietly opens onto a moment in which the world is constituted anew through movement.

As I climbed the red-earth slope beside a Hindu temple toward the reservoir, a small blue bird darted across in front of my child and me.
Whenever I think of my father, a little bird often appears.
Even after undergoing psychoanalysis in Berlin, where I talked extensively about my father, a plump robin with an orange breast appeared.
I believe that messages from the dead appear in the form of birds.
With this thought in mind, I continued up the red-earth slope.
When I reached the top, I found myself in a breathtaking, open landscape, bright and sparkling, filled with the sound of birdsong.
The reservoir continues to nourish the land of the Tamil people.
It was a quiet, bright landscape that gave no hint of the heavy and painful history of the massacres of Tamils in northern Ceylon up until 2009.
A magnificent man-made lake and a modern dam.
I felt that I had seen into the heart of my father at twenty-five.

We created an end credits sequence for a screening exhibition composed of a series of “50-second video works.” By layering the credits of the participating artists with fragments of everyday life, viewers reconstruct the collection of videos as a single film, imagining a feature that does not exist. From the end credits, which should signal the end, a new story emerges.

This summer, my family and I went swimming in the sea together for the first time. We went to the beach at Tomonoura. A typhoon was approaching, so the waves were stronger than usual, but even so, compared to the Sea of Japan coast in Niigata, where I went swimming as a child, the Seto Inland Sea felt surprisingly calm. Rather than swimming, I held onto a float and let my body drift with the waves, simply floating in the sea. Just surrendering myself to the sea. That time felt like the greatest luxury in life. When I looked back at the video I had taken while enjoying that luxurious time, I noticed a somewhat unfamiliar image appearing in the footage. Ponyo?

The constant cycle of nature made me realize that the eternal cycles of uplift and weathering, collapse and deposition, are a continuous process,
like a single breath.
In the vast breath of nature,
I gently try to layer my own small breath.
Plants, trees, and flowers, too, endure the rain and wind,
seek light, and breathe within the cycle of the seasons.
Receiving their presence with fingertips,
I try to breathe together with them.

I was looking back through my photo library for the first time in a while.
When the COVID-19 pandemic was still ongoing, I ran alone across an empty rooftop, trying to fly a kite. In my mind were the black kites I had seen by the shore of Lake Saiko, where I often went, gliding effortlessly on the winter wind. I had a perfect image of what it meant to fly on the wind. But there was not a breath of wind on the rooftop that day.
A bird that knows the wind, and me, who could not wait for it.

I have always liked swallows, and since moving here, I have been seeing them everywhere.
In front of the station, at convenience stores, in tunnels, and this year, swallows returned to a nest they had used last year.
This year, another bird also built a nest behind the steel frame of my studio, but I never got to see it leave the nest safely. Having birds take up residence makes the mornings noisy, a little bothersome, and makes me worry. And yet, they are so endearing that I find myself wishing I could fuss over them and feed them tirelessly, like a parent bird.
I made many swallow's nest objects, hoping that they might come to my place next year. Imagining a bird making its home in one of them, I layered some of the swallow footage I had been collecting.

Footage from my first solo summer camping trip. With sunset approaching, I hurried to pitch my tent on the riverbank of the Kiso River, then went to the nearby car to retrieve my belongings. The moment I shifted the gear into reverse to move the car, an inexplicable insect-like body suddenly appeared on the rear-view monitor, with a modified bike (Zoku-sha) parked beside it. The car’s warning beeps overlapped with my growing tension. The strong blast of lukewarm air from the air conditioner blew across my sweaty body. When I turned my gaze forward, a perfect sunset traced the ridgeline of the mountains. Behind me was the modified bike (Zoku-sha). Its owner was nowhere to be seen. On the rear-view camera, the insect-like body continued to obstruct my view.
The intersecting lines formed by the tent poles and the intersecting guidelines on the rear-view monitor. When these similar lines were sublimated into the contours of the modified bike (Zoku-sha) and the insect’s body, glowing in the evening sun, I became convinced that I had encountered the perfect equation governing this world. I was standing at the intersection of nature and the artificial.

In English, the tongue is spelled “tongue,” which has always struck me as a strange spelling. As a Japanese speaker, I think, “You don’t really need the ‘ue,’ do you?” But without the “ue,” it becomes “tong,” and when pluralized as “tongs,” it turns into that thing you use to flip slices of salted beef tongue at a yakiniku restaurant. Even when I repeatedly pronounce “tongue, toungue, tongue……” the “ue” remains in my mouth, like a piece of gum that has lost its flavor.

A work composed of footage from a folder titled “footage_maybenotused,” filmed during my residency in Paris. From my room, I looked down every day at someone’s belongings and a golden sheet fluttering in the wind. Its owner was one of the people who spent each night under the eaves, then dispersed again. Sculptures and paintings throughout the city, looked up at. Attention, indifference. What is seen, and what remains unseen. I found myself wondering where the difference lies. All around Paris, I encountered a shimmering mantle—glowing, separating, protecting, sustaining survival.

The relentless march of the economy and our seemingly endless desire for resources continue without pause. Behind the production of goods and services and the machinery of war, the flames of burning fuel continue to spread, violently tipping the scales of the climate. Yet the steps toward meaningful change in society and its systems remain faint, and many continue to turn a deaf ear to the voices of crisis. This climate, which should have been a paradise of abundant nature, is transforming into a “monster” created by humanity, devouring everything in its path. Its form, swallowing everything that stands in its way, seems like a monster born from our bottomless desire for more.

It takes time to chase the shape of light. Fifty seconds is nowhere near enough to follow it to the end.

In the short film Number Five Roulette, which I independently made this spring, I played three different roles. This work is a spin-off featuring one of those characters, Rookie Fortune Teller. I came across a large bird by a river near my home, so I switched to selfie mode to appear in the frame with it, while reading the Student’s lines from Oscar Wilde’s “The Nightingale and the Rose.”

It was about a year ago that I realized that overlapping a butterfly and a heart creates the shape of a pelvis.
Butterflies come flying into the garden of my new home every day. I moved here just a month ago.
I’ve heard that the souls of people who have passed away ride on butterflies, so every time I see one, I feel my mother’s soul.
The melody of Guri and Gura is an original composition by the Yoshigai family.
What I love most in this world is cooking and eating!

The song “Rokudenashi” playing in the video was covered by Fubuki Koshiji in 1986. The subtitles show the original song, “Le mauvais garçon” by Salvatore Adamo, which means “bad boy” in French. The singer is Yuka, whom I met at a smoking area. I noticed her smoking a kiseru pipe and, intrigued, started talking to her. I filmed this while the two of us were sitting in her kitchen as she sang the song for me. She said, “It feels like my song.” It made me think of a friend of mine.

This video work was filmed on the Nile River in Luxor, Egypt, through a filter containing red wine. A tourist boat happens to appear in front of the camera, which is focused on the surface of the water, and slowly approaches. The light passing through the wine stains the landscape crimson, and the ordinary tourist boat gradually begins to look like a vessel crossing between life and death.
